NPR just did a piece on the Rockefellers+ art this morn, and hd me remembering this. this is recorded at the marcel breuer house on the Rockefeller grounds in sleepy hollow NY. I lived in it for 3 weeks alone during ice storms, 2 am coyote gatherings, and the rise of an arab spring… as a self professed history geek i will say that living on the Rockefeller grounds filled me with a lot of mixed emotions, as historically speaking i am not completely instep with the way of which that family affected poor urban environments on a mass scale in negative ways, at the same time they have done, and continue to do a lot for art, and global issues i care about, so that brings a balance that is interesting and perplexing as well. Same perplexities/ complexities that had me thinking long and hard about my recent participation w/ the red bull music academy, amazing what they are doing, bt also something I almost turned down bc of similar issues and personal concerns for me that just come from growing up american urban black+ seeing things that others are just not privy too……. there’s no black/white in art life tho. it’s really all gray if u want to survive, bt u still have 2 choose wisely+ remain aware. Regardless, Marcel Breuer is a an art hero of mine and it was an honor to live in this vintage somewhat spooky house, write music,play my horn, and jst think abt life as it is, as it does….

Marion Brown: Rare Video

I never knew this existed. It’s an interesting 1967 short film profiling Marion Brown with a performance by his quartet with Dave Burrell, Sirone and Bobby Kapp. While the majority of the post-Coltrane saxophonists tended toward the tenor sax and punctuated their solos with growls or screams, Marion stood out as the gentle, lyrical voice on the alto.

David Brent Johnson’s feature on Indiana Public Media surveys Hubbard’s recordings from his CTI period, and sets forth the case that Hubbard expanded his art, rather than compromised it, with recordings like Red Clay – now more visibly, in the light of 21st century day, one of his classics.

Wadada Leo Smith to Perform Epic Ten Freedom Summers in New York

Composer and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith is readying his epic work, Ten Freedom Summers, named one of the three Pulitzer Prize finalists this year, for live performance in New York in the coming week. The entire work will be performed over three consecutive evenings, starting May 1, at Roulette in Brooklyn. (For info on the performances, go here.) In this article in the Chicago Tribune, Howard Reich ponders the significance of the work, both for the Pulitzer Prize process and for American music.
